INT LIVING ROOM – DAY
KEVIN (25) sits on a worn, green sofa in his dim living room. The room is littered with defaced photographs depicting a happy relationship between Kevin and AMY (23), a beautiful young blonde with green eyes. The relationship is no longer happy. Scattered amidst the photos are various electronic components, pliers, and blueprints for a bomb, apparently drawn up by Kevin himself.
One framed picture of Amy remains intact. Kevin picks it up, looks at it longingly, and smashes it against the floor. From the pile of electronic bits, he draws out the completed bomb, and straps it to his chest, setting the timer on the front to 5 minutes.
He flops back down on the couch, picks up a smoldering cigarette from an overflowing ash tray, and takes a drag. He pushes a button on top of the bomb, and the timer begins ticking down. Kevin has a look of sad resolve on his face.
After a few moments, the door opens, and in shuffles MRS. JENKINS, an elderly woman wearing a simple blue dress. Her white hair is pulled into a bun, and she walks with a cane. In her other hand, she is carrying a large canister labeled “SUGAR.” Kevin absentmindedly waves her in, and she makes her way toward the kitchen. She does this often, and Kevin hardly notices her intrusions anymore.
Suddenly, Kevin does a double-take and looks down at the bomb on his chest in horror. He flies off the couch in a panic and darts into his kitchen.
Mrs. Jenkins is slowly rummaging in the cupboards in the foreground. Kevin grabs her by the arm, and drags her towards the front door. She whacks him in the head with her cane and shuffles back into the kitchen. Kevin is stunned briefly, but recovers and charges back into the kitchen, fidgeting and pacing, grabbing his hair and biting his nails. Mrs. Jenkins is oblivious to this behavior. He looks down at the timer on his chest. 4 minutes left. Spurred into action, he picks her up by the waist and deposits her in the living room. He zips back into the kitchen, and returns moments later, dropping a sack of flour, a bag of sugar, and several other baking supplies over Mrs. Jenkins’ little frame. He flings the front door open, and swings his arms back in anticipation of throwing Mrs. Jenkins through it. She pinches his cheeks affectionately before he sends her and her sugar flying out of the house.
Kevin tries to slam the door but, something stops it. He looks down to see a foot wedged between the door and the frame.
A hand from the outside then appears and yanks the door wide open again.
Standing in his door way are two missionaries dressed in nearly identical suits. They smile and hold up fistfuls of pamphlets.
Kevin stares blankly, and starts to close the door again.
The missionaries hold the door open.
Kevin snaps, and leaps against the door, pushing with all his weight.
The missionaries put their weight into keeping the door open. Pamphlets are slipping out of the missionaries hands and falling to the ground.
Finally Kevin realizes that he cannot keep the two missionaries out.
Kevin lets the door go. The two missionaries fall forward into Kevin’s doorway as pamphlets fly into the air and flutter to the ground.
Kevin picks up the missionaries by their belts and hurls them face-first out the door. He stands in his doorway with a look of satisfaction, which is quickly wiped from his face as he looks down and sees that the Bible has fallen open to a page reading “There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.” (Psalm 23:18) Kevin furiously picks up the book and throws it out the door.
Relieved, Kevin takes a deep breath and leans on his door frame with his head pressed into his arm.
A quiet moment passes, and something tugs at his sleeve. Kevin looks around and sees nothing. His sleeve gets tugged again. Kevin looks down at his sleeve. GLORIA and CANDICE (10, 12), two adorable, big-eyed girl scouts, beam up at him, holding boxes of cookies. He slams the door, and stalks over to the couch. The doorbell begins ringing repeatedly. With each ring, Kevin twitches with irritation. Eventually, he can’t take it any more. The door swings wide, and Kevin tosses an armful of cash at the girlscouts, grabs a box of cookies, and gestures for the girls to leave. They gather up the cash and go.
Kevin turns around to head back inside. He checks the timer on his chest. It reads “0:30.” Kevin sighs in relief and then jumps several feet off the floor as Mrs. Jenkins emerges from behind him with a tray of freshly baked cookies.
Kevin tries to push her away, but she holds up the tray insistently. In a panic, he shovels mouthfuls of cookies into his mouth and then rubs his belly. He gives Mrs. Jenkins a thumbs-up to indicate the deliciousness of the cookies. Kevin picks her up and sets her down outside the door. Mrs. Jenkins smiles as Kevin slams the door shut.
Relieved to finally be rid of his guests, Kevin uses his sleeve to wipe the sweat form his brow. He lets out a sigh, which turns to a yelp as the doorbell rings again. Furiously, he whips the door open, prepared to yell at Mrs. Jenkins or the Girl Scouts. Instead, he finds Amy, holding up a flower, and a card that says “I’m Sorry.”
Kevin’s face falls. His jaw hangs open. He looks at the bomb. Five Seconds to go. Kevin looks helplessly at the audience, and invites Amy in.
Cut to black.
