Nikki Nopen's write-up (Diner)

LogLine-Elderly widow waitress finds love/companionship again after discovering how cold and harsh people can be.

An elderly woman begins work in a diner after her husband passes. Despite her sweet disposition and eagerness for company/ camaraderie the younger employees at the diner and the customers all shun/make fun of her/ get angry about her slowness. She is very lonely and distraught until one day at the diner an elderly man comes in for breakfast. By this point she’s kind of out of it and not too happy. She takes little notice of the man. In the days that follow the man keeps coming back day after day. He always wants to sit in the same booth and if it’s taken he waits for it. On about the fifth day as she’s filling his order her shaky hands drop the food before she can make it to the table. As she crouches to pick up the food the man comes to help her. They have a wonderful, romantic moment where their eyes meet as both their hands make contact as they both reach for some fallen toast but then the man’s back cracks. Cut to hospital as the man is recuperating. The elderly woman waitress comes to visit him. They both smile. She’s coy. He’s cocky. Cut to the diner. The old man and old woman sit in the familiar booth. He’s in a tux, she’s in a stunning wedding gown. The booth is decorated in white flowers, bells and a banner that reads “Just Married”. One of the younger waitresses comes with their food. They finish their meal and get up to leave. At the door the woman turns around and shouts blissfully “I quit.” She walks away as the stunned customers and staff look on. She reappears in the doorway to add “Oh, and by the way, we didn’t leave a tip. The services was horribly slow.”
