Catherine McConnell's Write-Up

An attention-seeking store clerk tries to find a flashy way to “off” himself without harming bystanders.

manically depressed store clerk (Jason) sits in a park with a timed bomb in a suitcase in his lap and waits for the end to come. As he waits for the time to pass, he figures out what life is about by watching kids playing and couples enjoying themselves. Not wanting to harm innocent people, he opens up the suitcase and tries to figure out how to disarm the bomb. Unable to figure it out, he tries to get rid of it. He tries sticking it in a bush, trash can, throwing it in a dumpster behind a building, and sending it down a stream that leads into town. All the while, people keep showing up around him (kids play around his feet as he tries to walk, bicyclists block his path, people crowd him). The noises of the people and the timer on the bomb nearly drive him crazy. As the bomb approaches zero, he closes his eyes in preparation to the doomed event and screams “No!” When zero hits, nothing happens. He slowly opens up one eye, then another. He looks around and everyone is staring at him. Happy that he was not dead, he jumps for joy; the suitcase is in one hand. In his excitement, he accidentally throws the suitcase and it explodes on impact startling everyone.

  1. Yeah I see the potential in this story. The subject matter is pretty dark but some of the situations would be pretty humorous. I think it would be funny if the guy is home alone and really depressed. He finishes strapping the bomb to himself with the intention he is going to sit alone and end his life. Then the doorbell keeps ringing and thwarts his plans. Every time the bell rings he hurriedly tries to get the person to leave so they are not harmed. He has to be very concerned with getting them to leave and these people have to be very reluctant. Maybe it's a salesman and then it's religious peddlers then it's girl scouts. He has to have an unbelievable amount of visitors on this day. Maybe he's depressed because his girlfriend left him and she shows up wanting him back just before the bombs about to go off and he pushes her out the door. I think it would be great if he freaks out before the bomb gets to 0 and then it just doesnt go off. And then for a splash of irony maybe he tries to catch his girlfriend and as he's running across the street he gets hit by a truck. The last scene could be him in a full body cast in the hospital getting nursed by his girlfriend.

  2. I kinda like where Nikki's thoughts are going here. Since we're trying to keep this one in the humor realm, it makes sense to me to keep him alive, even if a bit mauled.
